Growing in Faith
The guiding philosophy for Christian education at Holy Faith is that it should empower church members to grow in their own faith and understanding. We are about exploring where faith engages with life and maturing together in our knowledge of scripture, our understanding of how to live a life of meaning and service, and our experience of God.
Adult Education
During the school year, we have lay led programs at Holy Faith, including an Adult Bible Study that meets most Tuesday mornings at 10:30 am. These classes and activities are open to anyone who wants to join.
We have studied Islam, ending with a field trip to view a special collection of Near Eastern manuscripts; a study of the Passover ending with a Seder dinner; a short class focusing on the Gospel of Luke; an in-depth study on Mark; meditations on the Stations of the Cross; a series of "Art as Prayer." which involved creating art; a whole year focusing on the Bible as a whole; and many of the other religions in the world - those in which we are in full communion and others we ;had never even heard of. There are so many fascinating subjects - and this is all led and organized by members of the congregation.
Children
Children are important members of Holy Faith. We believe families should worship together because that is how children learn the importance of faith and the power of community. We also believe that the message should be offered at a developmentally appropriate level.
Families today have many demands on their time, so we combine our worship and Sunday School. From September through May, we offer a Sunday School program called "Godly Play." Children begin the service with their parents and process out at the Song of Praise to our Parish Hall for the Godly Play lesson of the day. They return at The Peace to share Communion with their families. In addition to our Sunday worship offerings, we also have special programs for children in a variety of age groupings.
Confirmation
The Sacrament of Confirmation takes place when the Bishop visits our Parish. This is usually every other year at Holy Faith. But Confirmation preparation is an on-going process which occurs under the leadership of Pastor Andrea Martin. All persons (Grades 9 – 12) wishing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation should contact Pastor Andrea as soon as possible.
Besides study, the confirmands participate in a series of outreach programs, recreational field trips and church service-related activities as part of their commitment.
Special Series and Forums
From time to time, Holy Faith offers special opportunities to increase spiritual growth and knowledge among our adults. We have offered series such as Alpha, a group of sessions exploring the Christian faith where each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation; reading, discussing, and attending a play on Something Must Be Done About Prince Edward County, a book dealing with racial struggles in a Virginia county during the 1950s and 1960s, and how they found a way forward through reconciliation; and the discussion series, You Never Know Where Your Spiritual Journey Will Take You,
